DJ AM: Another Death by Xanax

When will this end? Before Michael Jackson has even been buried, another celebrity falls victim to the same cocktail of drugs, prescribed by legal drug pushers.

Disc jockey Adam Michael Goldstein (aka DJ AM) was found dead in his apartment due to an overdose of painkillers. The circumstances of his addiction are eerily similar to Michael Jackson's.

One year ago, Goldstein was critically hurt in a plane crash that killed four people. He survived but was badly burned and required skin graft surgery. Was this his route to obtaining oxycodone (a habit-forming painkiller similar to morphine)?

In addition, according to TMZ, Goldstein "developed a dependency on Xanax and other benzodiazepines (a group of drugs used to treat anxiety) as a direct result of the plane crash. He developed a tremendous anxiety over flying — something he had to do frequently for his job. We're told doctors began prescribing Xanax and other anti-anxiety medications to relieve his fear, but the benzos triggered a relapse into addiction."

Well, isn't that just asinine? His anxiety and fear was due to emotional trauma, not a chemical imbalance! Did his doctor send him to therapy? Or is it easier to just numb the feelings with drugs? This is the sad reality of how many psychiatrists and psychologists practise. It's what also led to MJ's addiction to Xanax and painkillers. Benzodiazepines can create physical dependency in as little as 14 days at normal doses, and is especially, especially dangerous for those who have had substance abuse problems in the past.

Goldstein had made no secret of the fact that he was a cocaine addict. After staying clean for 11 years, he even made a TV show to help other addicts. Did his psychiatrist not find out before prescribing?

This has unfortunately become a sad tale of Hollywood doctors, or actually, doctors everywhere (if you open your eyes). If the patient can pay, let 'em have it.

Hippocratic oath? What's that?
