Managing Children with Special Needs
Wednesday, 6 July 2011, 7pm

Speaker: Dr. Shan Ong

Dr. Shan Ong is a consultant paediatrician in private practice based in Caringbah, Sydney, Australia. While he works in general paediatrics, he is also a specialist in child development. His interest in developmental paediatrics includes the assessment and management of children with developmental disabilities including autistic spectrum disorders, language disorders, specific learning difficulties and behaviour disorders. Dr. Shan has extensive experience working in multidisciplinary teams and communicating with families of children with multiple disabilities.

Parents who attended his talk last year learned so much from Dr. Shan due to his vast experience in working with special-needs children and their parents, and his zeal and passion in supporting such families.

Handwriting Skills Through Occupational Therapy Approach
9 July 2011 (Saturday), 2–5pm

This workshop will provide sound theory with practical and hands-on strategies for parents, teachers, therapists and caregivers to assist children who have difficulties with handwriting skills.

Objectives

1. Understanding how the sensory, motor and perceptual foundation influence handwriting performance.

2. Learn about the developmental stages of writing readiness and the importance of developing fine-motor skills.

3. Learn to incorporate ideas using multi-sensory strategies to develop handwriting skills to suit each individual’s needs.

4. Learn to recognise, identify and rectify your child's weakness.

5. Learn to be creative, make it fun and stimulating to implement a home handwriting programme for your child.

Speaker:

Teo Lee Fun is an Occupational Therapist trained in New Zealand and has been working many years in this field. She is Sensory Integration Praxis Test (SIPT) certified and also certified in Therapeutic Listening Program. She has acquired professional training in areas related to Sensory Integration and Sensory Defensiveness, Floor Time Approach, Neurodevelopment Treatment, Alert Program and M.O.R.E. Approach. Ms. Teo has a special interest in working with children with learning difficulties and sensory integrative dysfunction. She has conducted numerous seminars, lectures and workshops for parents, teachers and other caregivers involved with children with special needs.

Relationship Development Intervention

The RDI programme is a parent-based clinical treatment programme for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The programme addresses the social problems that people with ASD have difficulty with - friendship skills, empathy and desire to share personal experiences, etc.
